On September 7, an adolescent motorist rammed into their patrol car, killing 34-year-old Hartford police officer Robert Garten and badly injuring another.
Richard Barrington, 18, a student in the eleventh grade, stopped the young motorist on Wednesday night for failing to obey a traffic light. Police found that the car’s registration had been cancelled during the traffic encounter.
The officers then pursued the adolescent after he attempted to flee the scene. The defendant is said to have driven through two red lights while being pursued and struck a police vehicle driven by Robert Garten and Officer Brian Kearney.
Robert Garten tragically perished as a result of the collision and his wounds. Officer Kearney was critically hurt in the collision and was brought to the hospital, where his condition was said to be stable.
